*Unpolished* 1972 Rolex Red Submariner (Ref. 1680) Mk. V Dial

Rolex 1680 Vintage Ad

The Rolex Submariner ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1969, the ref. 1680 includes the date, unlike previous Submariners (ie. Ref. 5512 and 5513). The infamous Red Submariner is also a ref. 1680 which has the word "Submariner" in red lettering and was produced by Rolex from 1969-1975.

The Mk. V Red Submariner dial differentiates itself with the following details of the text located above the 6 o'clock – Most importantly the red text of the Mk V is applied directly to the dial, whereas previous versions also featured white text beneath, and the red text printed on top. The "6's" of the depth rating remain open similar to the previous dial variant, however, the opening in the Mk. V is far smaller and often referred to as "almost closed".

CASE & BRACELET

The impressive case is believed to remain unpolished and is in very strong condition, showing extremely thick and symmetrical lugs with very crisp factory chamfers and finishing throughout, and honest signs of general use present. The original Mk. III "fat font" bezel insert shows gentle wear and is in great overall condition with a subtle anthracite color and retains its tritium pearl. The Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end pieces is a service replacement and retains 10 links that show almost no stretch and will fit up to a 7-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The original matte black Mk. V "Red Submariner" dial is ver well-preserved and presentable. The only notable element of age present on the dial is some subtle clipping to the very edge of the white minute track, which is extremely common and expected in Red Submariner dials of this era, and otherwise exhibits no actual damage or age. The tritium lume plots have taken on a lovely creamy eggshell patina with no degradation present under UV light inspection. The original tritium hands have aged one shade more saturated than the dial and match the overall aesthetic of the watch perfectly, under UV light inspection the hands show no degradation. The metallic date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's
