The Rolex GMT is the jet-setting icon of the Rolex sports watch family. Like the Rolex Submariner, the Rolex GMT is sophisticated, rugged, and versatile. In 1954 Pan Am started using the newly designed Boeing 707 which allowed for Pan Am to fly transcontinentally and is said to have started the commercially available jet age. In the same year, Rolex received a request from PanAm to create a technical pilot's watch which indicated two time zones simultaneously that could be issued by the airline to their crews on long-haul transcontinental international flights. The original Rolex GMT Master has a fourth 24-hour hand directly displaying the same time zone as the standard 12-hour hand but on a 24-hour scale. This GMT hand enabled the crews to set the watch to GMT or another time zone, and, using the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel, set to the correct offset thus displaying a second-time-zone on the 24-hour scale.

CASE & BRACELET

The wonderful and early pointed crown guard case has been recently lightly polished and retains chamfers down its full and even lugs. The early "bottle cap" bezel is in excellent condition. The faded "fat font" Pepsi bezel is gorgeous, with only minor signs of use. The "U.S.A Made" Rolex C+I Oyster rivet bracelet dates to 1970 and was sourced with the watch, the bracelet retains 12 links and exhibits mild stretch.

DIAL & HANDS

The gilt chapter ring dial is both beautiful and original, retaining its glossy finish with some mild signs of aging and micro-spidering to the lacquer. The lume plots remain full and round showing no degradation under U.V. light inspection and have taken on a subtle green coloration through age. The early hands remain original to the watch, including the small GMT hand and match the dial perfectly, under U.V. light inspection the minute hand exhibits some minor lume loss and remains stable, the rest of the hands remain fully intact. The silver date wheel is era correct with open 6's and 9's.
