1979 Rolex Datejust (Ref. 16018) 18k YG "Tiger Eye"

For a short period of time in the 70s and 80s, Rolex manufactured timepieces featuring exotic materials including dials made from a variety of minerals, woods, and stones. Burlwood, Black Onyx, Tiger Eye, African Mahogany, Lapis Lazuli, and Birch were all used for dials during this time. Most commonly these watches were produced in 18K yellow gold. These variants are always strikingly vivid with high contrast and minimalist design. Because these exotic dials were only in production for a short time, they have always been highly collectible. Good examples of these original references are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

The Datejust stone dials are elusive as Rolex stone dials are most commonly seen in the Day-Date references. The tiger eye stone collaborates perfectly with the gold Datejust that creates depth on the wrist that is rarely seen in a wristwatch and loved by collectors.
