1984 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513) Mk V Maxi Dial W/ Box & Papers

The Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 is the embodiment of the classic dive watch. The 5513 is simple yet sophisticated and rugged. The ref. 5513 was first introduced in 1962 and ceased production in late 1989. The ref. 5513 is a purpose-built dive watch that lacks the date function like other Rolex Submariner models.

Vintage Rolex Submariner Ad

The dial on this 1984 Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 is commonly referred to as the Maxi Mk V dial, which is the very last dial variation Rolex produced for the ref. 5513 with a matte black finish. After the Maxi Mk V dial Rolex introduced the glossy dial with white gold surround markers to the reference. The Mk V dial is frequently seen in cases stamped in the 7mil to 8mil serial range. The identifying features of the Maxi V Dial include the following:

  • "Open 6's" in the feet first depth rating
  • The word “SUBMARINER” is written above the depth rating and is longer than the depth rating.
  • The “=” sign in the depth rating is directly below the “A” in “SUBMARINER”

CASE & BRACELET

The excellent case retains thick and symmetrical lugs that display subtle evidence of previous polishing and light signs of honest use. The original Mk. III "fat-font" bezel insert is in exceptionally well-preserved condition, remaining deep black in coloration with almost no signs of use and retaining its tritium pearl at the 12 o'clock position. The tritium pearl matches the dial patina nicely. The original Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end pieces retains 11 links that exhibit almost no stretch from use and will fit up to a 7 1/4-inch wrist, the watch comes with 1 additional link as well.

DIAL & HANDS

The matte black Mk V Maxi dial is stunning and in near-perfect condition, with no damage present and only nominal elements of age. The tritium lume plots have achieved an excellent eggshell coloration and exhibit no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly but feature slightly darker aging closer to the center of the hand stack which is normal, under U.V. light inspection the hour hand exhibit some superficial cracking but no real degradation is shown and the lume in the hand is stable. The minute and seconds hands display no degradation when inspected under U.V. light.
