Hamilton

1970s Hamilton Fontainebleau (Ref. 64047-3)

In 1892 Hamilton was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and initially specialized in producing pocket watches. The brand boasts a long and impressive history of breakthroughs in design and technology.

Due to becoming an official supplier to the U.S. Armed Forces during WWI, they transitioned focus from pocket watches to wristwatches. And come WWII, they stopped producing watches for the consumer market altogether to cater to the massive demand of supplying the U.S. Armed Forces, producing over one million timepieces, including marine chronometers. Their innovations and accuracy earned the company an Army-Navy E award for their excellence in manufacturing. After recovering from the demands of war, Hamilton returned to the civilian market to continue producing innovative and truly bizarre designs for decades to come. Including the watch we bring you today, the Fontainebleau, named after the famous French palace.

CASE & BRACELET

The fascinating wafer style stainless steel case is sure to hold eyes the moment it catches them. The case is in excellent shape, showing far less wear than its 50 years would assume. The Fontainebleau wears a gorgeous stainless steel bracelet that features flush end pieces and a unique stretch clasp.

DIAL & HANDS

The silver dial features considerable open space mixed with fat steel markers and hands. The horizontal stretch of the case and dial shape combined with the sharp angles of the markers, especially the cut ends of the 11, 1, 5 and 7 o'clock pieces, creates the illusion of the markers exploding out from the center. The dial also features a windowed date wheel at 6 o'clock.
