1978 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 Mk. II MAXI Dial

The Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 is the embodiment of the classic dive watch. The 5513 is simple yet sophisticated and rugged The Ref. 5513 was first introduced in the 1962 and ceased production in late 1989. The Ref. 5513 is a purpose-built dive watch that lacks the date function like other Rolex Submariner models. (eg. Ref. 1680.)

This specific 1978 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513 is in absolutely stunning condition and retains its original Mk. II MAXI dial. The MAXI II dial is commonly seen in the 5 mil and early 6 mil stamped cases and was introduced in 1978. This was the first time that “SUBMARINER” would be printed above the depth rating in a matte dial. 

There are several features of the Maxi II Dial that are distinct:

  • The lack of serif on the depth rating
  • The “=” sign is placed directly below and in the middle of the “A” in “SUBMARINER”
  • A more normal appearing “S” rather than the “zig zag S” in “SUBMARINER” as seen in the Maxi I and Maxi IV Dials

CASE & BRACELET

The previosly polished case retains even and thick lugs. The original fat font insert is in good overall condition, the previous owner replaced the once missing peral with a rolex luminova pearl service replacement. The Rolex 93150 bracelet w/ 593 end pieces shows some wear from use but has very minimal stretch.

DIAL & HANDS

The original matte black MAXI Mk. II dial is in excellent vintage condition. The large lume plots have aged to a beautiful golden yellow coloration and show no lume degradation when inspected under U.V. light. The original hands have aged to match the dial perfectly and remain fully intact when inspected with U.V. light.

ACCESSORIES 

None. The watch is running at spec and keeping time perfectly but additional service history is unknown.
