1978 Rolex Bark YG Day-Date (Ref. 18078) “Burlwood Dial”

For a short period of time in the 1980s, Rolex manufactured timepieces featuring exotic materials including dials made from a variety of minerals, woods, and stones.  Burlwood, Black Onyx, African Mahogany, Lapis Lazuli, and Birch were all used for dials during this time. Most commonly these watches were produced in 18K yellow gold. These variants are always strikingly vivid with a high contrast and minimalist design. Because these exotic dials were only in production for a short time, they have always been highly collectable.  Good examples of these original references are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
