The Rolex GMT is the jet-setting icon of the Rolex sports watch family. Like the Rolex Submariner, the Rolex GMT is sophisticated, rugged, and versatile. In 1954 Pan Am started using the newly designed Boeing 707 which allowed for Pan Am to fly transcontinentally and is said to have started the commercially available jet age. In the same year, Rolex received a request from PanAm to create a technical pilots watch which indicated two time zones simultaneously that could be issued by the airline to their crews on long-haul transcontinental international flights. The original Rolex GMT Master has a fourth 24-hour hand directly displaying the same time zone as the standard 12-hour hand but on a 24-hour scale. This GMT hand enabled the crews to set the watch to GMT or another time zone, and, using the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel, set to the correct offset thus displaying a second-time-zone on the 24-hour scale.

CASE & BRACELET

The case has been previously polished and shows thick and even lugs. The "Mega Fat Font" black insert remains in wonderful condition taking on an excellent and desirable charcoal grey fade. The caseback back is stamped 16750 and was most likely replaced by Rolex at some point during a service interval. The watch will come supplied on a NATO strap of your color choice. (Sage Green Shown)

Dial & Hands

The matte MK 4 " dial remains in good vintage condition, there is a small surface mark on the dial between the 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock marker as can be seen in the photos. The tritium lume has taken on a wonderful creamy patina. When viewed under UV light the lume plots are free of any lume degradation. The original hands have been restored and color matched by LAWW with tritium to match the dial coloration.
