Limited Edition 2017 Grand Seiko (Ref. SBGW253) W/ Box & Papers
This is a beautifully modern ode to the original Grand Seiko, which launched in 1960. For decades, Grand Seiko enthusiasts had to acquire such pieces directly from Japan or through a third-party seller, as they were exclusive to the Japanese market. Historically speaking, Grand Seiko has labeled itself as a sub-brand of Seiko up until 2017. However, the sister company decided to spread its wings and fly as a fully independent brand that year.
There are several characteristics that make this piece even more special...One of those being the blued-steel sweep-seconds hand, which is not featured in the gold or platinum models that were released at the same time. The stainless steel version also hosts a thicker case, at 11.2mm, while the other two models are slightly thinner. This limited edition piece is one of 1,960 stainless steel Grand Seikos. This production quantity was created specifically to commemorate the launch year of the original Grand Seiko from 1960.
This particular piece is simply stunning. Whether you admire the subtle contrast of the blued steel sweep-seconds hand, or you're drawn to the mirror-like finish created by Seiko's method of 'Zaratsu' polishing (a skill that requires 3+ years of practice before a craftsman is trusted to polish a watch), there's really no denying the crisp and shining elegance of this piece. The brand has perfected the craft of creating timepieces that vividly capture both light and shadow through their rigorous innovations in design and accuracy...and this Grand Seiko is the perfect example.
This would be an excellent buy for an enthusiast with a passion for Grand Seiko history and innovation, and an excitement for their new venture as an independent brand.
