'You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.’ — Patek Philippe started this now ubiquitous marketing campaign in 1966 and never looked back, though they already had an outstanding legacy since the watchmaker was founded in the year 1839. Patek built its reputation on several foundational pillars: tradition, innovation, and excellence, all of which are paramount in every timepiece they make, both old and new.

1940s Patek Philippe "Top Hat" (Ref. 1450) 18K YG

The unique design of the Patek Philippe "Top Hat" has earned it a cult-like following, capturing the attention of true collectors while remaining out of the mainstream spotlight. The nickname "Top Hat" is in reference to the distinguishing design of the case, in which the top and bottom portions whimsically resemble the shape of a top hat. The ref. 1450 is a symbol of Patek Philippe's creativity in the mid-century era, when alternative or riskier designs were celebrated. The "Top Hat" was truly a wristwatch designed for wearing, as it looks the best while on the wrist, its blocky yet ergonomic design molds to the wearer's wrist perfectly.

CASE & BRACELET

The handsome and uniquely designed 18K yellow gold case is in excellent condition, retaining its original design integrity and geometry with minimal evidence of previous polishing and only gentle signs of previous use. The original, superthick, domed crystal exhibits minor elements of age and is overall very well-preserved. The case maintains deep hallmarks throughout. The unsigned crown is believed to be original to the watch. The watch comes supplied on a 2pc Patek Philippe black alligator leather strap that is gently worn and retains the era-correct Patek Philippe 18K yellow gold tang buckle.

DIAL & HANDS

The original and very early vertically brushed silver dial is in genuinely impressive condition for its age. The dial features the classic "Patek Philippe Co" text which helps date the watch to the 1940s. The dial features some minor elements of age, most notably the dark aging above the 1 o'clock marker, however, it does not detract from the overall incredible aesthetic of the watch. The original hands are in excellent condition as well.
