1972 Omega Speedmaster Professional (Ref. 145.022) Straight Writing "Apollo XI 1969" Case Back

 Nasa Omega Speedmaster

(Alan Bean With An Omega Speedmaster Professional On Lunar Surface Of The Moon)

The Omega Speedmaster Professional remains one of the most iconic and beloved chronographs in horological history. Originally designed with motorsport timing in mind, the Speedmaster’s legacy was forever transformed when it became the official timepiece of NASA and the U.S. space program — ultimately becoming the first watch worn on the Moon.

While the Speedmaster line is rich with subtle variations across its many vintage references, this particular example from 1972 stands out for its rare and historically significant case back. It features the coveted “straight writing” engraving: “First Watch Worn on the Moon – Apollo XI 1969.” This commemorative case back was Omega’s first commercial acknowledgment of the Moon landing and was produced for less than a year, between 1971 and 1972.

Among the three known straight writing variants, the “Apollo XI 1969” version is the rarest, owing to its extremely limited production span. This example, dated by serial number to 1972, remains in exceptional condition — a superb piece of space exploration history and vintage Omega collecting.

The step dial or "Pie Pan" Omega Speedmasters possess a charm and feel that the new modern equivalents don't seem to quite have. The ref. 145.022 with the workhorse Cal. 861 movement is clearly built to last. The Speedmaster looks great on the bracelet as well as a handcrafted leather strap. It is one of our favorite chronographs due to its timeless design and functionality. Its versatility to be paired with the most formal and the most casual of wardrobes also makes the Speedmaster a good choice for the first vintage timepiece and or a classic daily driver.

The case retains its original pump pushers and Omega signed Crown. The original tachymeter bezel has achieved a handsome, yet subtle fade, with the only notable sign of use being a small chip underneath the "60". The rare "Apollo XI" straight writing commemorative case back is also in excellent condition, retaining very deep and crisp engravings throughout, with some of the original black enamel remaining. The original and rare Omega 1116 bracelet with 575 end pieces retains 20 links that show light stretch and will fit up to a 7.25-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The original matte black "pie-pan" dial is in simply exceptional– virtually flawless vintage condition, showing no damage or notable signs of age. The tritium lume plots have achieved a lovely golden yellow patina and exhibit no degradation when inspected under UV light. The original tritium hands mostly match the dial patina perfectly, though the minutes hand has aged to a dark grey color, which is common for this era. Under UV light inspection, the hands display no degradation.
