1970s Gruen Precision Chronograph (Ref. 770 CA) "Valjoux 7734"
As an American watch company that was based in Ohio, Gruen provided cleverly designed watches that housed Swiss-made movements and were once the largest timepiece company in the US. Like most American watch companies, Gruen has a complicated past, as they were sold a couple of times throughout the 50s and 70s.
The Gruen Precision ref. 770 CA is a charming watch, to say the least, and makes good use of the Valjoux cal. 7734 chronograph movement by pairing it with a beautiful and colorful dial and a very cool geometric case.
|Dial||Silver/Black & Red Sub-dials|
|Strap||2pc Handmade Leather Strap|
The geometrical case appears to have been very lightly polished in the past and shows excellent dimensions with light, honest signs of use. The case retains its original unsigned crown and pump pushers. The case back features all of its original factory markings in clear and visible condition. The watch will come supplied on a 2pc handmade leather strap.
The beautiful silver dial is in wonderful vintage condition with appropriate signs of age. The dial features the date window at 6 o'clock and a black outer ring that contains a tachymeter scale in white and a telemeter scale in red, which accent the sub-dial colorations beautifully. The black and red sub-dials are in excellent condition. The original tritium hands have taken on a subtle green patina, under U.V. light inspection the hour hand shows as fully intact, the minute hand is missing most of its lume.
The watch is keeping time and functioning perfectly, previous service history is unknown.
