1978 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 1680) Mk. I Dial

The Rolex Submariner ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1969, the ref. 1680 includes the date, unlike previous Submariners (ie, ref. 5512 and 5513). The Infamous Red Submariner is also a ref. 1680, which had the word "Submariner" in red lettering, manufactured from 1969 to 1975. This watch is an example of what is referred to as the "White Dial." It is the first ref. 1680 with the word "Submariner" in white lettering.

CASE & BRACELET

The strong case is believed to remain unpolished, exhibiting honest wear throughout while retaining the factory chamfers and crisp lug holes. The original Mk. III "fat font" bezel insert has achieved a beautiful grey fade, showing light signs of use and retaining its tritium pearl, which matches the dial nicely. The era-correct Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end pieces dates slightly later than the watch and retains 10 links that show light stretch and will fit up to a 7-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The original matte black Mk. I dial is in virtually flawless vintage condition, displaying no damage or age whatsoever. The tritium lume plots have aged to a warm eggshell patina with no degradation present under UV light inspection. The original tritium hands have aged to match the dial almost exactly and remain in excellent condition, showing only superficial cracking in the second hand when inspected under UV light. The metallic date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's.
