1995 IWC Mark XII (Ref. 3241) First Execution Dial W/ Guarantee Card & IWC Service History
The Mk XI was a watch born out of necessity and exacting military standards. Following the issuance of the famed “Dirty Dozen” timepieces during World War II, the British Ministry of Defence determined that these watches lacked the accuracy and durability required for aerial navigation. In response, the MOD introduced the 6B/346 navigation watch specification in 1947, later known simply as the Mk XI. Both IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre produced watches to this specification, though Jaeger-LeCoultre ceased production in 1953, leaving IWC as the sole supplier. IWC would continue outfitting RAF pilots with the Mk XI until the model was formally decommissioned in 1981.
Twelve years later, in 1993, IWC revived its celebrated pilot’s watch lineage with the introduction of the Mark XII under reference 3241. While conceived as a civilian offering, the Mark XII drew heavily from the purposeful design language of the Mk XI while incorporating several meaningful technical upgrades. The dial layout remains largely faithful to its predecessor, though the ref. 3241 introduces the modern IWC logo and a discreet date aperture at 3 o’clock, powered by the automatic cal. 884 movement with quick-set date. Additional improvements include a soft-iron Faraday cage for anti-magnetic protection, a screw-down crown for improved water resistance, and a sapphire crystal for enhanced durability.
The example presented here is an early-production Mark XII featuring the desirable Mk. I dial configuration, distinguished by the absence of the “Mark XII” text above 6 o’clock. This subtle yet noteworthy detail is seldom seen and adds an extra layer of charm and collectibility to an already beloved neo-vintage IWC reference.
