2000 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 16610) "Steve McQueen" - Real McCoy's Limited Edition

The Rolex Submariner ref. 16610, introduced in 1986 and commercially available by 1987, succeeded the 16800 and 168000 references while refining the model’s technical and material standards. Maintaining the robust design and functionality of its predecessors, the 16610 features an upgraded 904L stainless steel case—highly resistant to corrosion—and is powered by the reliable Rolex Caliber 3135 automatic movement.

This particular example is an exceptionally rare “Steve McQueen” edition created in 2000 by the Japanese heritage brand The Real McCoy’s to commemorate the opening of their specialty shop Contraband, founded by Hiroshi Okamoto, a devoted McQueen enthusiast. Produced as a special-order collaboration, these pieces are believed to have been made in very limited numbers using both the Submariner 16610 and Sea-Dweller 16600 as bases; however, examples based on the 16610 are notably rarer and seldom seen. The dial is uniquely marked with “STEVE McQUEEN” printed in red above the reference line—an unmistakable tribute to the King of Cool—while the caseback features intricate engravings including “Contraband,” McQueen’s signature and birth date, “THE MAN,” and “The Real McCoy’s” hallmark.

Seldom seen on the market, the Real McCoy’s Rolex 16610 “Steve McQueen” stands as a fascinating intersection of horology, Japanese craftsmanship, and American cultural iconography.
