Seiko
1976 Seiko Automatic Chronograph (Ref. 6138-8039) " John Player Special"
The ref. 6138-8039 chronograph, or "John Player Special" as it's often known, is powered by the revered Seiko cal. 6138 movement and beloved by enthusiasts for its oddball design and color scheme. Like most 6138 models, this one is modeled around motorsports – except this one takes it to the next level with a color scheme inspired by the livery of Lotus' 1976 Formula 1 racing team.
Featuring large, squared-off sub-dials at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions on the dial, the ref. 6138-8039 also features a quick-set day and date complication.
Because Seiko made so many varieties of chronographs at the time, and because they were on the more affordable end of the watch spectrum, many of the remaining 70s chronographs saw their fair share of rugged use, revealing their age and decades of use. However, this piece is in excellent condition for a chronograph of that era.
