Throughout the 1950s and '60s, the brand produced exceptionally capable sports watches that competed directly with offerings from Rolex, Blancpain, and Tudor, yet today it remains one of vintage watch collecting's best-kept secrets. Introduced in the 1950s, the Zodiac Sea Wolf was among the very first purpose-built dive watches made available to the general public, helping establish the blueprint for the recreational dive watch years before scuba diving became a mainstream pastime.

The ref. 691 represents the beginning of the Sea Wolf story as the model's inaugural production reference, making it a cornerstone for collectors of early dive watches. The earliest prototype examples lacked the now-iconic "Sea Wolf" signature on the dial and are virtually impossible to find. The first Sea Wolf-signed watches, while sharing the same ref. 691 designation is nearly as elusive. Distinguished by its unique glossy gilt dial featuring oversized Arabic numerals at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 o'clock, distinctive "windowless" hands, a countdown bezel, and early screw-down case back construction, the ref. 691 possesses a design language unlike any of its successors. These defining characteristics were carried over only briefly into the earliest ref. 699 models before Zodiac adopted a new direction for the Sea Wolf line.
