1953 Rolex Oysterdate Precision (Ref. 6294) Non-Luminous White "Waffle" Dial W/ Roulette Date

Although Rolex is best known for its automatic movements, the Crown has a long history of producing manually wound watches, many of which have become highly collectible in their own right.

Introduced in the early 1950s with the ref. 6094, the Oysterdate Precision was conceived as a simple, manually wound alternative to Rolex’s recently launched Datejust and Oyster Perpetual Date models. Its compact 34mm Oyster case and straightforward date complication offered mechanical simplicity, though the collection was anything but restrained aesthetically. Many examples featured distinctive details now prized by collectors, including intricately textured dials, roulette date wheels, and even colored enamel accents.

Produced with several compelling dial configurations, the ref. 6294 offered plenty of variety. This 1953 example, however, is particularly uncommon, pairing a beautifully textured white “waffle” dial with recessed hour markers, a blued seconds hand, and a roulette date wheel. Its non-luminous configuration further distinguishes it, resulting in an exceptionally elegant and rarely encountered expression of the early Oysterdate Precision.
