1955 Rolex Two-Tone Datejust (Ref. 6105) "Ovettone"

In the early 1920s when watch brands were competing to create the first successful automatic movements from scratch, Rolex took a different approach. By affixing an automatic rotor mechanism on top of their existing manual wind movements, they ended up creating a thick Oyster Perpetual case that we lovingly know as the "Bubble Back" or "Ovettone". Stacking the automatic mechanism on top of the manual wind movement proved beneficial, as it allowed the rotor to swing in 360 degrees without obstruction. The addition of the automatic rotor also muffled the existing manual movement, creating a quieter running watch.

The "Ovettone" nickname roughly translates from Italian as 'Big Egg'. Ovettones are a beautiful mix of early Sports Rolex meets elegant dress watches.

With an array of dial variants and models, Bubble Backs offer a charming presence on the wrist without breaking the bank. We love the warmth of the patina on this 6105!

The early no-lug hole stainless steel case has been polished in the past and retains full symmetrical lugs and exhibits honest signs of use, with a clearly visible blemish on the case beneath the crown. The yellow gold engine turned bezel shows a sleeve polish. The original 'Super Oyster' gold crown is in excellent vintage condition. The original acrylic crystal shows moderate scratching. The original two-tone rolled link Jubilee bracelet shows normal stretch for its age and retains 20 links.

The gorgeous cream-colored dial displays a faint but warm, glowing orange patina in the center. The remainder of the dial is in excellent condition showing appropriate signs of age. The radium lumed indices exhibit very minimal degradation and have taken on a lovely sandy coloration. The original radium dauphine hands match the dial perfectly and show no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The original date wheel is in excellent condition and exhibits contrasting red font.
