1956 Rolex Pre-Explorer "Ovettone" (Ref. 6298) Black "Honeycomb" Dial

$ 20,500

Before the Explorer became one of Rolex’s most recognizable sports watches, its identity took shape within the Oyster Perpetual family. The larger, rounded models collectors affectionately call “Ovettone,” or “big bubble backs,” helped establish the combination of durability, legibility, and understated elegance that would define the collection. Rolex supplied ref. 6098 Oyster Perpetual watches to the British expedition that saw Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, and introduced the Explorer that same year to commemorate the achievement.

Introduced in 1953, the ref. 6298 occupies a compelling place in this early history. An evolution of the ref. 6098, it incorporated a three-piece Oyster case and an improved screw-down crown, advancing the practical construction that underpinned Rolex’s growing reputation for adventure. Today, these “Pre-Explorer” references offer a fascinating connection between the refined Oyster Perpetuals of the postwar era and the purpose-built sports watches that followed.

This 1956 example captures that transition beautifully. Its striking black honeycomb dial brings texture and depth to the design, while the gilt printing, markers, and hands provide a warm contrast against the dark surface. Paired with an exceptionally well-preserved case, the result is a watch with both practical character and considerable elegance. It embodies the versatility that continues to make the Explorer lineage so appealing: equally suited to adventure and everyday life, with a sophistication that feels as relevant today as it did seventy years ago.

CASE & BRACELET

The exceptional stainless steel case retains impressive proportions, well-defined finishing, and strong geometry throughout, exhibiting only light signs of honest use and minimal evidence of prior polishing. The smooth stainless steel bezel remains in equally excellent condition, with minor wear. The original crown bears the Rolex coronet and “Brevet” cross markings. The distinctive “Big Bubble Back,” or “Ovettone,” case back retains its original “Rolex Oyster Case” engraving, a detail often softened or lost through wear and polishing. The watch was sourced on a later Rolex ref. 6251H rolled-link Jubilee bracelet, fitted with modified straight end pieces that evoke the bracelet styles found on larger Oyster Perpetual models of the 1950s. The bracelet retains 22 links, exhibits normal stretch for its style and age, and accommodates a wrist up to 7.75 inches.

DIAL & HANDS

The original black "honeycomb" gilt dial is simply a work of art, featuring a gilt drilled minute track, gilt 3-6-9 numerals and dagger markers, while remaining in beautifully preserved vintage condition, showing only gentle wear for its age. The darkly patinated radium lume plots all remain intact, with varying degradation present under UV light inspection. The original radium gilt alpha hands match the dial perfectly, show no degradation under UV light inspection, and remain in excellent overall condition.
