1960 Rolex Veriflat Precision 18K YG (Ref. 6512) "OCC" Dial
Introduced in 1954 and discontinued around 1962, the Rolex Veriflat remains one of the Crown’s most intriguing mid-century experiments, and the thinnest Oyster-cased Rolex ever produced. Offered exclusively in precious metals, the model paired the durability of Rolex’s waterproof Oyster construction with the refined proportions of a traditional dress watch. Priced similarly to the automatic Oyster Perpetual, the manually wound Veriflat proved a slow seller, resulting in limited production and considerable rarity today.
Achieving its remarkably slim 9mm profile required both a specially designed flat caseback and the development of the caliber 1000. Derived from Rolex’s first fully in-house automatic movement, the caliber 1030, the rotor was removed and the architecture modified to accommodate subsidiary seconds at six o’clock—an exceptionally uncommon feature among Oyster-cased Rolex watches. The resulting 18-jewel movement measures just 3.45mm thick and was adjusted for temperature and five positions.
Dating to 1960, this ref. 6512 is rendered in seldom-seen 18K rose gold and features a desirable “OCC” dial, denoting its officially certified chronometer movement. Elegant, technically ambitious, and decidedly unlike the sports watches that would come to define Rolex, the Veriflat represents a fascinating intersection of Oyster-case engineering and fine mid-century dress-watch design.
