*Unpolished* 1969 Bulova Accutron Astronaut GMT

Rather than wax poetic about mid-century Bulova or the nearly unprecedented technological leap represented by the Accutron, which we certainly could, we’ll let an excerpt from a letter written to Bulova by Lieutenant Colonel Frank Murray speak for itself. In it, Murray revealed the previously little-known connection between the Accutron Astronaut GMT, the CIA, and the agency’s highly classified A-12 supersonic reconnaissance aircraft:

“The environmental conditions inside the cockpit saw temperatures as high as 140° at the end of cruise legs, when the fuel remaining was insufficient to provide the needed heat sink for the air-conditioning system. Ordinary wristwatches worn by the pilots on the outside of their pressure suits were not holding up to these temperatures. A decision was made to try a unique type of watch in this setting. The Bulova Accutron Astronaut model held up to testing, so the CIA decided to furnish the Bulova watch to the CIA pilots flying the A-12.”

Introduced as the GMT-equipped evolution of Bulova’s revolutionary tuning-fork watch, the Accutron Astronaut paired extraordinary electronic precision with a fixed 24-hour bezel and an additional hour hand for tracking a second time zone. Its futuristic technology and distinctly purposeful design made it particularly well suited to the jet age–and, as history would reveal, to one of the most advanced aircraft programs ever undertaken.

Dating to 1969, this exceptionally well-preserved example remains unpolished, retaining the strong proportions, original finishing, and crisp definition of its stainless-steel case and bezel. Its deep black dial, broad luminous markers, and arrow-tipped GMT hand give the Astronaut an unmistakable presence, while its remarkable CIA and A-12 connection elevates it beyond a technologically important vintage watch into a genuine artifact of Cold War aviation history.
