The Rolex GMT is the jet-setting icon of the Rolex sports watch family. Like the Rolex Submariner, the Rolex GMT is sophisticated, rugged, and versatile. In 1954 Pan Am started using the newly designed Boeing 707 which allowed for Pan Am to fly transcontinentally and is said to have started the commercially available jet age. In the same year, Rolex received a request from PanAm to create a technical pilots watch which indicated two time zones simultaneously that could be issued by the airline to their crews on long-haul transcontinental international flights. The original Rolex GMT Master has a fourth 24-hour hand directly displaying the same time zone as the standard 12-hour hand but on a 24-hour scale. This GMT hand enabled the crews to set the watch to GMT or another time zone, and, using the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel, set to the correct offset thus displaying a second-time-zone on the 24-hour scale.

CASE & BRACELET

The lightly polished case retains slight chamfers down the lugs and shows very light wear from use. The original "fat-font" bezel has taken on a desirable light fade, exhibiting no wear from use. The original Rolex 7836 folded-link Oyster bracelet with 280 end pieces remains in excellent condition showing little to no wear and very light stretch from use.

Dial & Hands

The early Mk. I "Long E" dial remains in wonderful vintage condition. The dial exhibits four oil spots on the left side of the dial only visible in direct sunlight. The original tritium lume has aged to a wonderful creamy yellow coloration and exhibit no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The original tritium hour, minute and sweep-seconds hands have aged slightly darker than the dial, matching the overall look and feel of the watch. The tritium GMT hand was most likely replaced in a Rolex service in the early 70s. The hands remain fully intact and show no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The silver date wheel is era correct with open 6's and 9's.
