1969 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513) "Meters First" w/ Kissing 40 Insert
The Rolex Submariner is the embodiment of the classic dive watch. The style was first introduced in 1953 and after many adjustments in early models evolved in to the reference 5513 seen here which was produced from 1962 to 1989. Throughout its production the Ref. 5513 retained its sophisticated yet rugged look. Absent of the date function (included in other Submariner models eg. Ref. 1680) the 5513 dial is clean and simple. Early 5513s like this example show the depth rating with meters first followed by feet. Rolex made the switch to display the depth rating with feet first around 1969. Rumor has it this was done to appeal to the expanding American market.
In addition to the meters first dial, this specific Ref. 5513 has the original and era correct Rolex 7mm "Twin-Lock" crown that does not exhibit the dots or underline like the other Rolex sports models of the same era. The original matte black dial is in immaculate and untouched condition with matching lume plots and hands which have achieved a wonderful eggshell like patina.
