1970s Gruen Precision Airflight "Air Force Association" Dial

$ 2,500

Few figures embody the spirit of American military aviation in the 20th century quite like Lieutenant General Richard M. Hoban. Born in 1922, Hoban earned his pilot wings in 1943 and went on to serve as a B-17 pilot and instructor during World War II, later flying 28 combat missions in Korea and over 100 in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam era. His career culminated in his role as commander of the Strategic Air Command’s Eighth Air Force, where he oversaw a vast network of bombers, tankers, and intercontinental ballistic missile systems, an essential component of America’s Cold War deterrent. A command pilot with more than 7,700 flying hours, Hoban was highly decorated, receiving honors such as the Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit. In 1972, his service was further recognized by the Utah chapter of the Air Force Association, naming him “Military Man of the Year,” an accolade commemorated by the engraving on this very watch’s case back.

It is this direct and tangible connection to a decorated Air Force leader that elevates this Gruen Precision Airflight beyond a typical vintage timepiece. Gruen’s longstanding affiliation with aviation is exemplified in the Airflight’s ingenious 24-hour “military time” display, achieved through its rotating aperture dial, an innovation designed with pilots in mind. While today it stands as a captivating and uncommon complication, in its time it served as a practical tool for aviators operating with the same precision and discipline that defined General Hoban’s career.

The gold-plated brass case remains in unpolished and unrestored condition, naturally exhibiting some wear and loss to the plating, though it remains in excellent overall condition for the age. It features a domed crystal and its original crown, which also exhibits some loss to the gold-plated finish. The stainless steel screw-down case back is in great condition with minimal wear, and bears an original engraving that reads "Utah AFA, Military Man Of The Year, 1972, M/G, Richard M. Hoban" in crisp and fully legible condition. The watch comes supplied on a 2pc leather strap.

DIAL & HANDS

The original and remarkably well-preservedsilver sunburst dial, co-branded with the AFA insignia, features no damage or notable age. The gold Arabic numerals pop from under the cutout indices and match the fantastic gold combination ring-dauphine handset.
