1970s Yves Saint Laurent Mid-Size "Reverso" 18K YG
This charming, unassuming, and downright attractive watch was designed not by a renowned watchmaker, but by a renowned fashion designer, and it could never be recreated today. The Yves Saint Laurent "Reverso" is a distinctive example of cross-disciplinary design, during an era when fashion houses were beginning to explore watchmaking with serious intent. Housed in a refined rectangular case, the watch features a fully reversible construction, a functional and aesthetic hallmark most closely associated with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. This mechanism allows the wearer to conceal the dial entirely, transforming the piece into a sculptural gold bracelet on the wrist.
The dial itself is notably restrained, executed with no overt branding, emphasizing purity of design over overt signature. Subtle details such as the “Paris” designation at 6 o’clock provide context without disrupting the overall balance. The layout, proportions, and minimalism draw clear parallels to the design language established by Cartier, particularly the Tank, a model closely associated with Yves Saint Laurent himself, who was known to favor its aesthetic.
Produced during a period when design collaboration and influence between major French houses was more fluid, this example reflects the broader visual codes of the time. It is widely understood that Cartier maintained a close relationship with Saint Laurent, even involving him in promotional efforts, and there is speculation that Cartier’s design influence extended into pieces such as this. Additionally, due to current patent protections surrounding the reversible case construction, watches of this type were largely confined to this era and limited in production.
The result is a watch that is both technically interesting and visually versatile. Its minimal, architectural design allows it to transition seamlessly between formal and casual settings, while the reversible case offers a unique duality, functioning equally as a timepiece or as a piece of jewelry.
