*Transitional* 1971 Omega Speedmaster Professional (Ref. 145.022-69 ST) Cal. 861 "220 Error Bezel"
The Omega Speedmaster Professional stands as one of the most celebrated chronographs ever produced. Originally developed for motorsport, its trajectory soon expanded into aviation before ultimately securing its place in history as a critical instrument of NASA’s U.S. space program. Within the vintage Speedmaster lineage exists a nuanced spectrum of references, each defined by subtle variations that reward careful study and elevate individual examples beyond the ordinary.

(Alan Bean With An Omega Speedmaster Professional On the Lunar Surface Of The Moon)
At first glance, this early-1970s Speedmaster Professional may appear unassuming—but that is precisely what makes this example such a compelling sleeper. This transitional 1971 ref. 145.022-69 ST retains numerous hallmarks of the coveted “Pre-Moon” era while introducing a handful of short-lived and highly unusual attributes. Chief among them is the exceptionally rare “220” error tachymètre bezel—an accidental production anomaly believed to have been manufactured for less than a single month. The watch also features a matte black “step” dial and a Pre-Moon caseback, despite being produced after the Apollo 11 landing, further underscoring its in-between status.

The convergence of these details results in a Speedmaster that quietly flies under the radar, yet offers immense appeal to seasoned collectors who value nuance, rarity, and originality. Whether worn on its original bracelet or paired with a thoughtfully chosen leather strap, the Speedmaster Professional remains as versatile as it is iconic. Equally at home in formal or casual settings, this transitional example represents an outstanding entry point into vintage chronographs—or a meaningful addition to a serious Speedmaster collection.

CASE & BRACELET
The classic asymmetrical case is in remarkable condition, retaining crisp edges and finishing with honest wear present throughout. The original and very rare tachymetre bezel features the "220" error print and is in excellent overall vintage condition, with some minor, yet expected, wear present. The case retains its original pump pushers and Omega-signed crown. The transitional "pre-moon" case back is in great overall condition, with the Seamaster and hippocampus engravings crisp and fully legible. The original Omega 1039 flat-link, stretch bracelet with 516 end pieces retains 24 links that show nominal stretch and will fit up to a 7.75-inch wrist.
DIAL & HANDS
The original matte black "pie-pan" dial is virtually flawless, showing no damage or visible signs of age. The tritium lume plots have taken on a wonderful creamy patina with no degradation present when inspected under UV light. The original tritium hands have aged slightly darker than the dial, but coordinate nicely, and exhibit no degradation under UV light inspection.
