1972 Rolex Datejust 18K RG (Ref. 1601)

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic and beloved Rolex watches ever made. This classic dress watch has been produced by the Swiss luxury watchmaker since 1945 and has remained a timeless classic that is instantly recognizable as an item of refined quality and functional design. The Datejust was designed for everyday wear, and its sleek and elegant design makes it one of the most universally loved watches for both men and women.

Vintage Rolex Ad

Rose gold was the least used metal by Rolex in the 60s and 70s, apart from platinum. It’s generally believed that Rolex only created rose gold timepieces as special orders, meaning they typically weren’t standard production watches for Rolex, making rose gold examples from this era some of the most sought-after among collectors.

The wonderful and uncommon 18K rose gold case remains in very well-preserved condition, exhibiting light evidence of being previously polished and minimal wear from use. The 18K rose gold fluted bezel is also in excellent, minimally polished condition. The case retains its original rose gold twin-lock crown. The original 18K rose gold Gay-Freres Oyster-Rivet bracelet is stamped 4/72 and retains 13 links that show nominal stretch and will fit up to an 8-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The original and beautiful pink sunburst "pie-pan" dial shows light spotting and age on the dial, making for a handsome vintage aesthetic, as no notable damage is present. The darkly patinated tritium lume plots all remain intact, with only nominal degradation present when inspected under UV light. The original rose gold hands have been professionally restored with tritium to coordinate with the dial. The metallic date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's.
