1973 Rolex Datejust (Ref. 1601) No-Lume "Sigma" Dial

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic and most beloved Rolex watches ever made, even though the Datejust was launched in 1945 it has remained a timeless classic and is instantly recognizable as an item of refined quality and functional design. The Datejust can be worn just as easily with a suit as it can be with jeans and a tee-shirt.

Vintage Rolex DateJust Ad

This specific 1973 Datejust ref. 1601 retains its original and rare "sigma" non-luminous silver "pie-pan" dial, original white gold fluted bezel, and Jubilee bracelet that is perfectly suited for everyday wear. A Sigma dial is a Rolex dial named for the letters printed at the bottom of the dial at the 6 o'clock position. Most Rolex dials are commonly marked with “T Swiss T,” under the 6 o'clock marker, however, a Sigma dial is marked “σ T SWISS T σ.” This signifies the use of gold components within the dial.

This piece would make a great start for a new vintage collector, or be a great addition to an expanding collection. We love the early Rolex Datejust for its simplicity and its classic sophistication.

The excellent case remains thick with lightly polished but symmetrical lugs, that display light signs of honest use. The white gold fluted bezel is crisp and in wonderful condition, with only minimal signs of use. The acrylic crystal has a slight imperfection at the 6 o'clock and can be replaced upon request. The orignal Rolex 6251H rolled-link Jubilee bracelet with 55 end peices retains 22 links and exhibits normal stretch for the style and age of the bracelet.

The lovely non-luminous silver sunburst "pie-pan" sigma dial with onyx enamel markers is simply exquisite, showing only the slightest amount of age. The original black enamel inlayed hands are also in lovely condition, the hour hand does show a small piece of missine enamel though it is hard to notice with the naked eye. The metallic date wheel is original with open 6's and 9's.
