1978 Rolex Submariner (Ref.1680) "Tiffany & Co."
The Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1966, the Ref. 1680 includes the date, unlike previous Submariners (ie. Ref. 5512 and 5513). The Infamous Red Submariner is also a Ref. 1680 which had the word "Submariner" in red lettering, manufactured from 1966-1973. This watch is an example of what is referred to as the "White Dial." It is the first Ref. 1680 with the word "Submariner" in white lettering. Around the late 1950’s, Tiffany & Co. began printing their name on the dials of the watches sold in their stores. Tiffany dials” are simply regular Rolex dials that have been stamped with the Tiffany & Co. name. Despite the tight level of control that Rolex now maintains over their products, co-branding was somewhat common during the 1960’s thus making co-branded Rolex dials very rare and highly sought after.
This extremely rare example is a watch many collectors spend years searching for to put into their collection. From the excellent "Tiffany & Co." dial to the unpolished case finishing. This example is for the true collector that is looking to round out their collection with a significant timepiece rarely seen on the wrist.
|Bracelet||Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet W/ 580 End Pieces|
The unpolished case is sharp with factory chamfering clearly visible and showing light wear from use. The original insert remains in wonderful vintage condition retaining the tritium pearl and is showing light wear. The 93150 bracelet with 580 end pieces retaining 10 links shows light stretch. The "Tiffany & Co." stock number is located inside the bracelet clasp and reads "9104."
The original matte "Tiffany and Co." dial remains in excellent vintage condition. The lume has taken on a desirable ivory patina and shows slight degradation in the 12, 1, 2 o'clock hour markers. The original hands have been previously color matched to the dial and exhibit light cracking. The silver date wheel has the era correct open 6's and 9's.
None. The watch was recently serviced and is running at COSC spec backed by a 1-year warranty of accurate timekeeping
