Bulova
*Unpolished* 1979 Bulova (Ref. 4420101) "Royal Oak"
The vintage Bulova obsession in the watch community is very real and here to stay! The unique and funky watches that Bulova made from the 60s-80s are always a cause for conversation. Ranging from colorful diving chronographs to eccentric electric watches like the famous Accutron.
The Bulova "Royal Oak" is an accessible homage to the famed Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The AP Royal Oak was arguably Gerald Genta's most famous watch design, and was introduced at Basel Fair in 1972. Interestingly enough, Genta had created designs for Bulova for several years in the 1960's before designing the monstrously iconic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. When Bulova saw the immediate success of the Royal Oak, they released their version of the design several years later.
While a true Royal Oak isn't exactly at the most attainable price point for all collectors, the Bulova "Royal Oak" is a beautiful example of a classically designed stainless steel sports watch that is a moderately rare, certainly handsome find, at a price that's much more accessible.
