1979 Rolex Submariner (Ref.1680)

The Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1966, the Ref. 1680 includes the date, unlike previous Submariners (ie. Ref. 5512 and 5513). The Infamous Red Submariner is also a Ref. 1680 which had the word "Submariner" in red lettering, manufactured from 1966-1973. This watch is an example of what is referred to as the "White Dial." It is the first Ref. 1680 with the word "Submariner" in white lettering.

This specific piece would make a versatile daily driver in a casual setting or would look great paired with a suit. The Ref. 1680 is an all-around wonderful sport watch, and would make a nice addition to an existing collection, or would be a unique stand-alone vintage piece.

CASE & BRACELET

The case remains very strong, showing evidence of being lightly previously polished and retains very full and even crown guards and lugs. The original "fat-font" insert has achieved a lovely navy blue coloration with little signs of use, the pearl at the 12 o'clock is a luminova replacement. The original 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end pieces remains unpolished with light stretch and has 11 links.

DIAL & HANDS

The excellent matte black dial is truly an incredible example with no signs of aging or blemishes. The tritium lume plots have achieved a beautiful golden patina and exhibit no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The original tritium hands have aged a shade darker than the dial, under U.V. light inspection the minute hand shows a small crack in the lume halfway the hand and is stable and the hour hand shows the same in the top third of the Mercedes symbol remaining stable as well. The silver date wheel is era correct with open 6's and 9's.
