Cartier
*Unpolished* 1980s Cartier Santos Carrée (Ref. 2960) White Dial
Few watches capture Cartier’s ability to unite elegance and practicality as convincingly as the Santos. Founded in Paris in 1847, the maison established its reputation through exceptional jewelry before helping shape the future of the wristwatch with a design born from the demands of early aviation.
In 1904, Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for his friend, Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time without reaching for a pocket watch while flying. Among the earliest purpose-built men’s wristwatches, the Santos paired a distinctive square case with exposed bezel screws, establishing a design language that remains unmistakably Cartier more than a century later. Introduced commercially in 1911, it brought this practical innovation to a wider audience.
The Santos entered a new chapter in 1978, when Cartier reimagined its iconic design with a more contemporary, sport-oriented identity, introducing an integrated bracelet and a sharply geometric case. While the two-tone stainless steel and yellow gold configuration became perhaps the most recognizable expression of the Santos Carrée, the all-stainless-steel variation offered a distinctly different appeal. Without the contrasting warmth of yellow gold, the design takes on a more understated, almost industrial character, allowing its angular case, flat bracelet links, and exposed screws to take center stage.
This 1980s reference 2960 beautifully embodies that restrained aesthetic. Its monochromatic stainless steel construction is complemented by the classic white dial, bold black Roman numerals, and blued steel hands, providing a touch of traditional Cartier elegance against the watch's otherwise architectural design. Powered by an automatic movement, the reference 2960 offers the same everyday versatility that made the Santos Carrée so compelling, while its crisp, angular geometry distinguishes it from the softer contours of the later Santos Galbée. A particularly pure expression of the original integrated-bracelet Santos, the all-steel Carrée occupies a compelling place in Cartier's history and remains just as relevant on the wrist today.

CASE & BRACELET
The impressive stainless steel case is believed to remain unpolished, retaining crisp factory finishing, sharply defined bevels, and strong original geometry throughout. Honest, even wear is present, consistent with age and use, though no notable dings or damage are evident. The stainless steel bezel exhibits uniform wear consistent with the rest of the case, with no significant dents or imperfections. The case retains its original crown set with a faceted sapphire, while the caseback shows some wear with its factory engravings remaining intact. Completing the watch is its original Cartier flat-link stainless steel bracelet, which remains in excellent condition with no discernible stretch and accommodates wrists up to 7.25 inches.
DIAL & HANDS
The original white Roman numeral dial remains in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting an attractive spiderweb patina throughout the lacquer, a characteristic aging phenomenon commonly observed on Cartier dials of this era. Despite the fine surface crazing, the dial remains beautifully preserved, with no areas of chipping, flaking, or missing lacquer. The original blued-steel hands are equally well-preserved, showing no notable wear or damage.
