Zenith
*Unpolished* 1980s Zenith Port Royal Triple Calendar Chronograph Titanium (Ref. 95.0100.418) Grey Dial 'El Primero Cal. 3019PHF'
Few chronograph movements have left as significant a mark on horological history as the Zenith El Primero. On January 10, 1969, Zenith unveiled the Caliber 3019 PHC, the world's first fully integrated, high-frequency automatic chronograph movement, narrowly beating Seiko and the Chronomatic consortium of Breitling, Heuer, Hamilton, and Büren in the race to develop an automatic chronograph. Operating at an impressive 36,000 vibrations per hour, the El Primero represented a monumental achievement in mechanical watchmaking, establishing a technical foundation that remains influential more than half a century later.
Building upon this groundbreaking architecture, Zenith developed the Caliber 3019 PHF, an extraordinary evolution of the original El Primero that incorporated a complete triple calendar, displaying the day, date, and month, alongside a moonphase complication. Remarkably, these additional functions were integrated while retaining the movement's impressive high-beat frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour and its full chronograph capabilities, resulting in one of the most sophisticated automatic chronograph calibers of its era, all housed within a surprisingly compact package.
Introduced in 1984, the Zenith Port Royal Ref. 95.0100.418 represents a fascinating intersection of traditional haute horlogerie and distinctly 1980s design. Produced in just 270 examples between 1984 and 1986, this exceptionally uncommon reference paired the celebrated Caliber 3019 PHF with a striking 40mm titanium case and integrated titanium bracelet, creating a futuristic aesthetic that stood apart from Zenith's earlier chronograph offerings. The Port Royal was offered with grey, black, or white dials, while a two-tone titanium and gold configuration was also available. The grey dial variant, as seen here, is particularly compelling, featuring crisp white Roman numerals, contrasting navy-blue calendar discs, and a beautifully balanced arrangement of recessed chronograph registers and moonphase display. The result is a remarkably sophisticated and visually distinctive timepiece that captures both the mechanical ingenuity of the El Primero and the bold design language of the 1980s, making it one of Zenith's more intriguing and overlooked vintage chronographs.

The impressive, multifaceted, and architecturally distinctive titanium case remains beautifully preserved and unpolished, retaining crisp factory geometry and finishing throughout, with only gentle signs of use. The case retains its original signed crown, chronograph pushers, and calendar-setting pushers. The caseback exhibits minor tool marks and light wear, while its factory engravings remain crisp and fully intact. The original integrated Zenith titanium bracelet is equally well-preserved, exhibiting minimal wear and virtually no stretch. The bracelet retains 22 links and will accommodate wrists up to approximately 7.25 inches.
DIAL & HANDS
The original satin slate-grey dial, accented by crisp white Roman numeral markers, beautifully complements the titanium case, creating a cohesive and understated monochromatic aesthetic. The dial remains in near-perfect condition, showing no damage or visible signs of age. The original tritium lume plots have developed a charming yellow patina, exhibiting only nominal degradation despite the thin factory application. The original white-enameled tritium hands complement the dial beautifully, with luminous material that matches the dial plots and exhibits no degradation under UV inspection. The original navy-blue calendar and date discs remain intact, with the day and month displayed in German.
