1984 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513) Mk. V "Maxi" Dial

The Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 is the embodiment of the classic dive watch. The 5513 is simple yet sophisticated and rugged. The ref. 5513 was first introduced in 1962 and ceased production in late 1989. The ref. 5513 is a purpose-built dive watch that lacks the date function like other Rolex Submariner models.

The dial on this 1984 Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 is commonly referred to as the Maxi Mk V dial, which is the very last dial variation Rolex produced for the ref. 5513 with a matte black finish. After the Maxi Mk V dial Rolex introduced the glossy dial with white gold surround markers to the reference. The Mk V dial is frequently seen in cases stamped in the 7-mil to 8-mil serial range. The identifying features of the Maxi V Dial include the following:

  • "Open 6's" in the feet first depth rating
  • The word “SUBMARINER” is written above the depth rating and is longer than the depth rating.
  • The “=” sign in the depth rating is directly below the “A” in “SUBMARINER”

    CASE & BRACELET

The excellent case retains very thick and symmetrical lugs that have been gently polished in the past and show minimal signs of use. The original Mk. III "fat font" bezel insert is deep black in color with light signs of use and retains the tritium pearl. The Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end pieces is a later service unit that retains 11 links, showing minimal stretch. The bracelet will fit up to a 7 1/2-inch wrist.

    Dial & Hands

The original matte black Maxi Mk. V dial is in exceptionally well-preserved, virtually flawless condition, showing no damage or age. The tritium lume plots have achieved a charmy golden-yellow patina with no degradation present under UV light inspection. The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly, under UV light inspection the hour and seconds hands exhibit extremely subtle superficial surface cracking and remain stable.
