1988 Precista Royal Navy Issue Quartz Diver (6645-99-75733 14) "Big Triangle"

The history of British military dive watches is dominated by a handful of familiar names, but some of the most interesting examples emerged during the Ministry of Defence's transition away from Rolex. By the early 1980s, CWC and Precista had stepped in to supply purpose-built watches to the Royal Navy, with Precista first producing an automatic diver in 1982 before later supplying the quartz-powered model bearing NATO Stock Number 6645-99-757-3314.

Produced in relatively small numbers during 1988 and 1989, these Precista quartz divers have become particularly elusive examples of the post-MilSub era. The 1988 production is distinguished by its early "Big Triangle" dial, featuring an oversized luminous marker at 12 o'clock reminiscent of the Omega Seamaster 300s that preceded it in British military service. The matte black dial otherwise follows classic MoD convention, with luminous 3, 6, and 9 numerals, bold tritium hour plots, highly legible hands, and the circled "T" identifying the use of tritium luminous material.

Function dictated nearly every aspect of the watch, from its stainless-steel case and protected screw-down crown to its fixed spring bars, rotating 60-minute bezel, and engraved military caseback. Inside is a robust ETA quartz movement, reflecting the MoD's increasing preference for the accuracy and reliability of quartz technology.

Far less commonly encountered than its CWC counterparts, this 1988 "Big Triangle" Precista represents a fascinating transitional chapter in the British military diver, retaining the unmistakable aesthetic and purpose-driven construction of the mechanical watches that came before it while embracing the quartz technology that would define the next generation of issued military timepieces.
