2002 DOXA Sub 300T Professional (Ref. 30010)

$ 2,650

Doxa S.A. was founded in 1889 by Georges Ducommun as a maker of dress watches and other timepieces. In the late 1960s, Doxa decided to dedicate resources to produce a timepiece to be used exclusively for diving. Doxa consulted with various Navy dive teams and divers including Jacques Cousteau who was then chairman of "U.S. Divers." Doxa's innovative watches were quickly adopted by both commercial and military divers. Jacques Cousteau, was so impressed by the Doxa Sub300T that he became a distributor of the reference in the United States and co-branded the dial of the Sub300T with the U.S. Divers logo.

The Doxa company aimed to be the watch of choice for the emerging recreational diving community. With sturdy cases, high-visibility dials, and a smart bezel design, the Doxa Subs quickly became the watch of choice for recreational divers in both America and Europe. Doxa S.A. went through many acquisitions and changed ownership a few times over the years. Synchron bought Doxa in the late 1960s and added the brand to a group that also included Ernest Borel and Cyma, and was purchased again in 1978 by the Aubry Freres Company.

Today it may seem that all heritage brands are reissuing modern versions of their more successful vintage pieces, though this piece comes from a time when this notion was still novel, and allowed for creative liberties. In 2002, Doxa introduced their first re-issue limited edition timepiece of their iconic Sub 300T model with an orange dial, though, this re-issue was really more of a reimagining of the classic model as it featured a much longer and even more robust case that curves to hug the wrist. The reference for this model is 30010, however, it's most commonly referred to as the Doxa Sub 300T '2002'. Two versions of the watch were created, 1000 of each model which were individually numbered, so 2000 total, and they both featured the bright orange dial. The only difference between the two was the printing on the dials, the more classic "Professional" version like the one presented here, and a "Seahunter" version which also featured a diver motif on the dial. While there were 2000 of the ref. 30010 created, we almost never see this watch come up for sale on the open market.
