1969 Rolex Red Submariner (Ref. 1680) "Tropical Mk. II"

Rolex 1680 Vintage Ad

The Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is a stunning classic. First introduced in 1969, the Ref. 1680 includes the date, unlike previous Submariners (ie. Ref. 5512 and 5513). The Infamous Red Submariner is also a Ref. 1680 which had the word "Submariner" in red lettering which was produced by Rolex from 1969-1975.

The Mark 2 dials differentiate by having thicker red lettering of "SUBMARINER" than the mark 1 or 3 dial variants, and thinner text of the depth rating featuring open 6's.

This stunning example of an early Red Submariner has gone completely tropical with an intense brown coloration rarely seen in matte dials. The Ref. 1680 is an all-around wonderful sports watch, and would make a nice addition to an existing collection, or would be a unique stand-alone vintage piece.

The excellent thick case has been previously polished showing little wear with thick and even lugs. The "fat font" bezel insert has faded beautifully to a vibrant chestnut coloration. The Rolex 93153.18 folded link oyster bracelet with 380 end pieces remains unpolished with some minor stretch from use.

DIAL & HANDS

This rare and remarkable mk. II matte dial is near flawless with a perfectly even "tropical" brown coloration. The lume is for the most part gone on the lume plots, characteristic of tropical dials, but can still be seen under U.V. light. The original tritium hands have taken on a charming ivory coloration and match the overall look and feel of the watch. The silver date wheel is era correct with open 6's and 9's.

ACCESSORIES
