The Ref. 648A Automatic is the lesser-known and much harder to find older brother to what became the internationally loved IWC Ingenieur, which is still in production today. Both featuring oversized 36.5mm cases, the 648A is in many ways a very similar watch to the Ingenieur Ref. 666AD, though the 648A was manufactured more in the traditional dress watch fashion of the time. The two watches share the same caliber of movement (cal. 8531), dial layout, and overall aesthetic of the case, even though the 648A features a non-screw-down caseback. Through the incorporation, the screw-down case back for waterproofness or a movement shield for anti-magnetism IWC decided to rebrand the watch as an Ingenieur.
This particular IWC Automatic Ref. 648A in stainless steel is simply stunning with a nonsense design. The dressy Calatrava case and dial design pairs excellently with the utilitarian stainless steel material. This watch makes for a highly reliable daily wearer, that is designed to last.
