*Unpolished* 1987 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 168000) "Triple 0"
The Rolex Submariner ref. 168000, also known as the "Triple 0", is a very rare and transitional timepiece that combines the best elements of the vintage and modern Rolex Submariner into one complete package. The rarity of the watch is determined by its extremely slim production window, which is believed to be only about 7-9 months between 1987 and 1988. The "Triple 0" Submariner was essentially a stepping stone, or prototype model, that bridged the gap between the earlier ref. 16800 and the ref. 16610 that came shortly after in 1989. Previous to the ref. 168000 all Rolex Submariners were cast in 316L stainless steel, but were upgraded to 904L for this specific reference. While the ref. 168000 was short-lived, its impact was substantial and still felt today, as 904L stainless steel has remained the material of choice for Rolex ever since and is still employed on the modern offerings today.

The original deep black bezel insert is in near-perfect condition with no damage or notable wear, and retains its tritium pearl which has achieved a warm eggshell patina. The case back retains its original green factory sticker. The original Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet with 593 end pieces retains 11 links that show no stretch and will fit up to a 7 1/4-inch wrist.
DIAL & HANDS
The original glossy black dial with white gold surround markers is in excellent condition, showing a subtle speckled patina throughout while exhibiting no damage. The tritium lume plots have taken on a vivid custard patina and show no degradation when inspected under UV light. The original tritium hands have aged to a creamy patina that is a few shades lighter than the dial, but matching to the tritium pearl on the bezel insert creating a cohesive overall aesthetic and patina pattern. The hands exhibit no degradation when inspected under UV light. The white date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's.
