Elgin
1950s Lord Elgin 14K YG "25-Year Award For Buick Motor Co."
Founded in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois, the Elgin National Watch Company was once the largest American watch manufacturer, best known for its precision pocket watches and later for producing reliable wristwatches and instruments for the U.S. military.
By the mid to late 1930s, Elgin introduced its elevated “Lord Elgin” line—a premium collection designed to compete with higher-end Swiss and American brands of the era. Distinguished by their 21-jewel movements and superior materials, Lord Elgin watches represented the pinnacle of the company’s craftsmanship. Unlike standard Elgin models, which often featured 17- or 19-jewel calibers and base metal or stainless backs, Lord Elgin watches were typically fitted with solid or gold-filled cases throughout, emphasizing refinement and durability.
This 1950s example, crafted in solid 14K yellow gold, was presented as a 25-year service award for Buick Motor Company, embodies the postwar American tradition of corporate recognition through fine timepieces. The modest 29mm case and timeless design are emblematic of mid-century style, while the high-grade 21-jewel movement underscores Elgin’s commitment to precision and quality.

A handsome symbol of both American craftsmanship and mid-century corporate heritage, this Lord Elgin stands as a fine example of an era when a gold watch was the ultimate mark of achievement.
