1971 Rolex Red Submariner (Ref. 1680) Mk. V Dial

The Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 is one of the most significant references in the model's history, introducing the date complication to the Submariner line for the first time. Debuting in 1969, the earliest examples are immediately distinguished by the now-iconic red "Submariner" designation printed on the dial, a subtle detail that has since become one of the most celebrated characteristics among vintage Rolex collectors. Produced for only six years before Rolex transitioned to white dial text in 1975, the "Red Sub" represents a relatively brief yet immensely important chapter in the Submariner's evolution.
Like its no-date counterparts, the Ref. 5512 and Ref. 5513, the Red Submariner can be divided into two primary dial families: the early meters-first dials and the later feet-first dials. Across its production, six distinct dial variations are recognized by collectors.
The Mk V Red Submariner dial differentiates itself with the following details of the text located above the 6 o'clock – Most importantly, the red text of the Mk V is applied directly to the dial, whereas previous versions also featured white text beneath, and the red text printed on top. The "6's" of the depth rating remain open, similar to the previous dial variant; however, the opening in the Mk V is far smaller and often referred to as "almost closed".

CASE & BRACELET
The excellent case retains very thick, symmetrical lugs that have been recently detailed/polished to exhibit crisp chamfers. The case displays gentle signs of use. The original Mk. III "fat font" bezel insert exhibits a super subtle yet tasteful patina and is exceptionally well-preserved, showing no notable signs of use, and the tritium pearl remains intact. The original Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet with 380 end pieces and "pateted" diver's extension retains 11 links that show light stretch for the style and age of the bracelet and will fit up to a 7 1/2-inch wrist.
DIAL & HANDS
The original Mk. V Red Submariner dial is simply exceptional, with a near-perfect dial. The only element of age present on the dial is some nominal clipping to the very edge of the white minute track, which is extremely common and expected in Red Submariner dials of this era. Otherwise, the dial shows no actual damage or age. The tritium lume plots have achieved a charming creamy eggshell patina and exhibit no degradation when inspected under U.V. light. The original hands have been professionally restored with ear-correct tritium to perfectly match the dial. The metallic date wheel is original with open 6 and 9 numerals.
