Founded in 1972, Cabot Watch Company (CWC) was established to produce military timepieces for the British Ministry of Defense. Over the following decades, CWC became one of the MOD’s principal watch suppliers, producing wristwatches for several branches of the British Armed Forces and building a reputation for simple, robust instruments designed specifically for service use.

The CWC SBS Diver emerged from a new Ministry of Defense specification introduced in 1987 for the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service (SBS), Britain’s maritime special operations unit. Designed as a dedicated military dive watch, the new specification called for a 300-meter depth rating and a non-reflective, black PVD-coated case to minimize glare, along with a practical day-date display for personnel on extended deployments. Watches produced to this specification carry the military NSN 0555/6645-99-7995443, distinguishing them from the earlier Royal Navy dive watch contracts.

The first SBS divers entered service in 1988 and were fitted with acrylic bezel inserts similar to those found on contemporary CWC Royal Navy divers. The specification evolved in 1992 with the introduction of a metal bezel insert featuring a distinctive, wide hash-mark design unique to that contract year. By 1993, CWC had adopted the narrower hash-mark metal bezel insert that would become the familiar configuration used on subsequent SBS-issued watches.

This example comes from the 2005 contract, an especially interesting chapter in SBS Diver history. Research published by CWC Addict indicates that approximately 250 examples were issued under the 2005 contract. Watches from this period are particularly notable because a portion were reportedly supplied at the request of the Royal Engineers and consequently carry W10 service markings associated with British Army issue rather than the usual 0555 Royal Navy designation.

Several caseback variations are known. Earlier examples appear to have been drawn from watches already prepared with the standard 0555 designation, with the original marking struck through and W10 added in its place. Later examples were marked W10 directly, suggesting that they were prepared specifically for Army issue. A small number have also surfaced bearing both 0555 and W10, with the original 0555 designation left intact.

While developed around the requirements of the Special Boat Service, SBS-pattern watches from this era are also documented in connection with other elements of the United Kingdom’s specialist military units. Their relatively small contract numbers, distinctive service markings, and direct connection to British military diving and special operations have made early and unusual SBS-issued examples an increasingly important area of modern British military watch collecting.
