*Unpolished* 1971 Omega Flightmaster (Ref. 145.026) "Cal. 911"

Tool chronographs dominated the late 1960s and early 1970s, a trend for which Omega is due credit. During this time Omega created several different chronographs, all with different applications, one of which was the Flightmaster. This new line of chronographs was a variant of the Omega Speedmaster and was specifically designed for pilots. Produced and sold from 1969 to 1977, the Flightmaster featured a unique and distinctive oversized 43mm case with three crowns, two pushers, and an impressive seven hands. The Flightmaster was a technical masterpiece that offered a range of functions, including the standard chronograph feature, an independent blue 12-hour GMT hand, and an inner rotating timing ring similar to that of a supercompressor. This watch allowed for the tracking of a second timezone without the need for military time, making it an essential tool for commercial pilots and frequent travelers. In fact, the case back of the Flightmaster was engraved with a Douglass DC-8, further emphasizing its aviation pedigree.

The Flightmaster series was composed of two versions, each featuring multiple dial variants. Additionally, there exists a rare and limited solid gold version of one model, which is seldom seen. The first Flightmaster variant, reference 145.013, was equipped with the Omega cal. 910 movement, a highly modified version of Omega's renowned Lemania-based cal. 861 movement. The 9 o'clock sub-dial of ref. 145.013 was the most noticeable feature, serving as a 24-hour indicator with a half-green display to distinguish day and night. Subsequently, Omega introduced the cal. 911 movement and modified the reference to be either 145.026 or 145.036, which replaced the 9 o'clock AM/PM sub-dial with a traditional running seconds sub-dial.

In a quote from Stuart Tentoni via chronomaddox "The Flightmaster has a somewhat undeserved reputation as being a "Monster-sized" watch. Yes, if you look at the Flightmaster's exterior dimensions it is a large watch. However, similar to the Fender Stratocaster, the Flightmaster's shape and taper actually fits and blends in with the back of the wrist well and wears better than many smaller watches", which perfectly sums up the way the Flightmaster reference range wears while on the wrist. The Flightmaster is oversized, but extremely functional and also ergonomic.

The Omega Flightmaster was designed with pure functionality in mind, making it a reliable and indispensable tool for pilots and anyone who required accurate timekeeping while on the move. Its impressive array of features and unique design make it a sought-after timepiece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
